Do you know how to breathe? Ok you’re alive so I’m going with yes on that one, but do you know how to breathe to balance your autonomic nervous system?
Most days I hit the ground running, full of plans and optimism and usually coffee. Sometimes, though, midday rolls around and I’m not making the progress I want to. Grabbing another cup of coffee used to be my go-to, but now I try breathwork or taking a walk in the sunshine first.
Here’s why:
When our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight, aka stressed) is dominant, we tend to go into one of three modes: fight, flight or freeze.
When we spend too much time in fight mode we eventually face burnout, and then accomplishing even the smallest things feels exhausting. The flight and freeze responses usually involve active or passive avoidance of things we want to do but feel overwhelmed by. When we’re stuck in these modes it’s easy to stop using social media as a learning, connection and inspiration tool, and instead thoughtlessly scroll the day away.
HOWEVER, if we re-engage parasympathetic (rest and digest) mode and bring our autonomic nervous system into balance, we can stop the cycle of burnout and avoidance that are so common these days.
I get more done – at least more of the important things – when my nervous system is balanced. People, and apparently cats, like me more when I’m in this mode, too. (Say hi to Coco, who crawled in my lap when I started today’s session.)
One of the fastest and easiest ways I’ve learned to activate parasympathetic mode is through breathwork. Despite being alive for like, awhile now, I’m kind of a terrible breather. 😂
Though I’m getting better at it, I find it helpful to use tools like EmWave from Heartmath or specific techniques like buteyko breathing. (These mentions aren’t sponsored and I’m not an affiliate for them, but maybe I should be!)
